The Alphabet Letter Exchange is BACK!

It's BACK!!

Last summer I debated hard about whether to host the Exchange or not. I ended up taking a year off because it seemed that many of us would be teaching online rather than in-person.

With 2020 behind us and normalcy returning, I am bringing it back this year. I missed it and I know many others did too. This year I will have my 8 kindergarteners back as 1st graders and I'm excited that they will now have the chance to participate with my new kinder kiddos.

The project is a fun addition to introducing letters and sounds in pre-K and kindergarten and to reviewing letters and sounds in 1st grade. It's pretty simple- your class is placed in a group of 26 teachers and each class is assigned a letter of the alphabet. Your class decorates 26 A's or B's or C's (whatever your assigned letter is) and you mail out 25 to the other teachers in your group and keep one for yourself. At the end you hopefully have a complete, cute, meaningful, and entirely unique alphabet to help your class learn.

If you think you would like to participate, please read through the following information BEFORE YOU SIGN UP. There is a link to the sign up form at the end of this blog post. You can also check out previous blog posts about the Alphabet Letter Exchange and see pictures of past projects by clicking {here}.

Project Details:

How does the project work?
1. Your class will be assigned a letter of the alphabet.  Print 26 of your letter (card stock works well but is not required) and decorate them with something that starts with that letter. There are examples from past year on my blog firstgradefoundme.blogspot.com if you’d like to take a look. Have fun and get creative!
2. You'll need to mail 25 of the letters to the members of your group and you'll keep one. Each teacher is responsible for their own postage charges. At the end of the project you should have a complete, unique, student-made alphabet! It is your choice whether you mail the letter in a regular letter-size envelope or larger manila envelope.
In the event that you don’t receive all of your letters, which can happen unfortunately, some teachers have their own students make any missing letters. You might also email your group and find teachers who are willing to have their classes do another letter. But let’s make this the year EVERYONE gets a complete alphabet!
3. Also, please include a short letter about your class, school, and where you live. This is optional but is really fun for the receiving class.

Link to register: please email me firstgradefoundme@gmail.com if you want to participate

**to those of you who have participated before,  I may be changing the letter templates to a different font. As always, the templates will be sent out with the notification of what your letter is and which group you are in. The templates will still be capital letters.

If you are new to the project or my blog, welcome!! If you are returning to the project, WELCOME BACK!!!!

 many others did too.

2019 Alphabet Letter Exchange

I'm starting to get questions about whether I'm hosting the exchange again or not so it's time to answer some questions.

Yes, it is happening again BUT...
this has been a very different year for my husband and I. To make a very l-o-n-g story very short, we moved away from the town we'd lived in for the last 19 years and I had 3 different teaching positions at 3 different schools in 2 districts. I'll be teaching a K-1 combo next year (which I've been doing since January) and need to focus on that and figuring out how the beginning of the year works at my new school.

So... I am keeping this year's exchange VERY SMALL to make it less time-consuming and easier for me to manage. We'll have only 3 groups (78 teachers) instead of the normal 8-11 groups with 200-300 teachers. I realize this will leave a lot of you out who want to participate and I am SO VERY SORRY! It was either this or I thought about skipping this year. Next year life should be back to normal and the plan is to open the Exchange again as usual.

Tomorrow (July 5 at 9am California time) I will email everyone who participated last the link to sign up. Since there are so few spaces this year I hope you see the email and can sign up quickly. I expect it to fill up tomorrow.

That being said, unless you participated last year there will not be room in the Exchange this year. If you participated last year but don't get the email I apologize for that as well. I'll be working from my master list and may miss some of you of were added to spreadsheets, etc, etc. To anyone who does not get to participate,  I apologize but hope you will check back next year.

Alphabet Exchange 2018 is HERE!

The Alphabet Letter Exchange is back again! I'm a bit later than usual getting it started because my husband and I moved an hour and half from home at the end the of the school year to take of my mother-in-law for the summer. She broke her hip and recovery is slow. I am so excited to be finally getting this started! Registration will close at the end of July to give me time to put group lists together and that information out to you before the craziness of setting up my classroom begins. I may have to close registration early if groups are close to being full. Please follow my blog and social media to stay updated.

**Update as of September 2nd, I am establishing a waiting list for the project. If you are interested in participating, please email me at firstgradefoundme@gmail.com.

If you've been part of this project in the past, we are doing things the same way except that I am asking teachers to be sure their letters are mailed in September and not to wait if their letter comes up later in their curriculum. I realize you may want to make it part of your letter of the week, but please make this exception and let's get our letters out in September.

If you're interested in the project, please read the info below before registering so that you know what the project is all about. A link to sign up is at the end of this post. Thanks in advance for your interest/participation!

How does the project work?
1. Your class will be assigned a letter of the alphabet.  Print 26 of your letter (cardstock works well but is not required) and decorate them with something that starts with that letter. 3. Also, please include a short letter about your class, school, and where you live. This is optional but is really fun for the receiving class.

Please email me if you wish to be on the waiting list for this year.
Also, you can follow me on social media so you don't miss any updates. Just click on the pretty little circles in the top right column of my blog so we can stay connected!
Thank you so much for visiting my blog!

2017 Alphabet Exchange is Almost Full

As of today we are very close to having 12 groups of 26. In order to have full groups I will change the sign up form to a wait list once the 12th group is full. If another 26 teachers sign up before Friday I will create another group. My original post said sign ups would be open this week but that they may close early in order to have the right number of teachers in each group. I apologize if you don't make it in this year, but I do always end up needing a few people from the wait list.
Thanks to everyone who has signed up this year. Letters will be flying all over North America before we know it!

Alphabet Exchange Group Lists are Out!

A very quick post today... If you signed up for the Alphabet Exchange, you should have received an email from me, or several over the last 2 days (ha! ha!). If you didn't get an email with your group information and you think you should have, please email me ASAP.

If you think you would like to participate but haven't signed up already, I am forming a wait list. Click on the button on my sidebar and fill out the form to get on it. If the list gets to 26 more teachers, I'll be happy to open up another group.

So far we're 234 teachers from 37 states and 3 different countries who teach preschool thru 2nd grade. Thanks everyone! I can't wait to start getting letters!

Classroom Decor Giveaway & Alphabet Exchange Update

http://firstgradefoundme.blogspot.com/2016/07/classroom-decor-giveaway-alphabet.html

It's official- my first classroom decor packet is all finished & uploaded! It's been a labor of love to create this, that's for sure. Next year I'm moving into a new classroom (well, new to me at least) and I'm so excited! I've been in the same room for about 14 years and it was so good to me. So many good things happened in that room. But the varnish on the wood walls was peeling and I had done all I could to make the room look good with blue, orange, and brown cabinet doors. (My principal said it screams 70's!) I'll miss it anyway. My new room is in a portable with blue carpet, cabinets that all match, a counter that's not all scratched up, and walls I can staple into rather having to use tape so much. Here are some pics.

6th Annual Alphabet Letter Exchange Project

It's time again for the Alphabet Exchange Project. We're in our 6th year and it's been a lot of fun so far! Here are a couple of pictures from last year's exchange.

Alphabet Exchange Update

This is the 5th year of the Alphabet Letter Exchange and I'm so thrilled that we're able to do it again! This year there are 234 of us participating. I found these cool fill-in maps online to show which states and Canadian provinces the participating teachers are from.
Yesterday the emails went out with group lists and letter assignments. If you signed up but didn't get yours, let me know. As of now the project is full.
Thank you to all the teachers who are participating! I love the fun this project brings to the start of the school year. Once my new 1st graders get the first letter they'll be so excited! I can almost hear their excitement when they see me coming from the office with that tell-tale envelope in my hand.

If you'd like to read more about the project, you can check previous posts HERE, and  HERE.

Hope you're having a great summer day!

Alphabet Letter Exchange Registration is Ready!

I'm so excited to kick off the 5th Alphabet Letter Exchange! I had to look back in my blog to find out when the first one was. It's amazing to think some of us have been doing this since 2011! This year it would be fantastic if we had a teacher from every state. I think there were teachers from 38 states and 2 Canadian provinces last year.
If you're wondering what the Alphabet Letter Exchange is, there is a description of the project below along with the rules and sign-up form. This is a picture of an almost-finished alphabet I put up in my classroom a few years ago (I just hadn't gotten the rest of the letters when I took this picture). You can check out more pictures from other teacher's classrooms in a previous post {here}.
The Alphabet Letter Exchange is a whole lot of fun for kids and teachers! It's a good way to teach some geography too. Some teachers display a map on the wall and label where each letter comes from and other have had their students color states on a map as they get the letters.
If you'd like to participate in the project this year, please read the project description below and fill out the Google form at the bottom of this post.

Here's how the project works:

1. Your class will be assigned a letter of the alphabet and put into a group with 25 other teachers. Each teacher would have their class decorate 26 of that letter. A template will be provided. I might switch the letter style for this year, but they will still be capital letters. You'll print it on card stock and have your class decorate it. Decorate it however you like, just have fun and get creative!
2. You'll need to mail 25 of the letters to the members of your group and you'll keep one. Each teacher is responsible for their own postage charges. Some people send their letters in manilla envelopes and some fold them and put them in letter size envelopes. It really depends on how the letter is decorated. Either way is okay. At the end of the project you should have a complete, unique, student-made alphabet!

3. You could also include a short letter about your class, school, and where you live. This is optional.

The project will run from mid-August thru September 30th to give everyone time to get back to school, decorate, and mail their letters. If possible, try to send your letter as early in September as possible.

I'd love to have you participate! Just a little favor, though, please sign up only if you really intend to follow through with the project. It is heartbreaking to kids and teachers alike to end up with an incomplete alphabet

Just a couple more things:
I'm planning to stop sign-ups on July 24th so I can get the lists out by the beginning of August. That's a little earlier than usual, but school starts for me in mid-August so I want to make sure I can get your groups out to you before I have to go back to school.
Also, I'll be in touch via email to give you any updates and send out the templates.
You can keep up with the project through my facebook page too. I'm getting familiar with twitter and instagram and will post some pics on there too. But the best ways to keep right now are this blog and facebook.

If you want to participate in the project this year, please click {HERE} and fill out the Google form.

**As of July 21, I disabled the sign up form. If you would like to participate there may still be openings. Please email me at firstgradefoundme@gmail.com if you are interested.

I've also made this button (just link it back to my blog, please) if you want to share about this exchange on your blog facebook page, etc.. I'm so happy to have you along on the wonderful bloggy adventure!

Alphabet Letter Exchange- Coming Soon!

http://firstgradefoundme.blogspot.com/
The Alphabet Letter Exchange is definitely on again this year! Several teachers who participated in the past have already sent emails saying they're excited to do it again and so am I. I love this project and my students always do to!

In case you aren't familiar with the project, teachers sign up their classes to participate, get placed in a group with 25 other teachers from as many varied states and Canadian provinces as possible, then are assigned a letter of the alphabet to have their class decorate. That teacher keeps one letter, mails out the other 25, and should receive the rest of the alphabet decorated by other classes. Each letter usually includes a note from the class or teacher about where they're from and makes for a fun lesson in geography as well as reading. You can find out more about it and see some photos teachers have sent of their alphabet displays in these past posts here and here.

Sign ups will start on tomorrow, June 22, and run through July 24. I have to start and end a little earlier than usual because school starts a little earlier for us than it has before and I want to get all the groups made and emailed to you before things get too crazy here. I'll post a Google form as I have before. Please only sign up if you truly think you will follow through with the project.

Before I go, I'd like to introduce you to the newest member of our family, little Jackson. He's about
2 1/2 months old. He's been with us for a few weeks already. He and his 2 siblings had a rough start to life. They were found in the attic of a house and their mother had passed away. They were only about 3 weeks old. Thanks to the help of his wonderful foster family, Jackson's now a very happy kitty whose life consists of lots of PLAY, eating, and a little sleep.
Here's Jackson when we first got him
Here he is now

Have a great Sunday!

Alphabet Letter Exchange Show & Tell

This morning I'm linking with Barb over at Ruby Slippers Blog Design to show some 2013 Alphabet Exchange photos and to tell you how the exchange is going for 2014.
http://www.rubyslippersblogdesigns.com/2014/07/show-tell-linky_29.html
These first photos are from Kathy in Virginia.
This close up photo shows a few of the letters better. H is for hat, Y is for yellow pom-poms, W is for water (I think it had ocean animal stickers on it.), S if for snake, and I loved the A is for astronaut! It was so cute! I think it came from Alabama.

Packaging up their Y's to be mailed

Just look at these excited little ones! Aren't they adorable? I love the little ones holding their envelopes high!

Photo from Kara in Tennessee

Thanks for the photos Kara & Kathy! And now for the TELL part of show & tell.

The Alphabet Exchange is FULL for 2014- 208 teachers from 38 states and 2 Canadian provinces.
You can still sign up to be on the WAIT LIST, though. It seems every year that a few teachers need to back out before the project gets started and I've been able to include a few more people. Click HERE for the wait list form. Group and letter assignments will be out within the next 2 weeks.

Thanks again to Barb for hosting this linky each week. Be sure to check it out and maybe link up too!

Alphabet Letter Exchange- Ready, Set, Go!

It's that time again... the Alphabet Letter Exchange is ready to go!

Last year there were over 280 teachers who participated in the project. Thanks so much to all of them for enabling this project to continue. The first year I did it I just hoped for 25 other teachers so that my class could do it. I love getting to know other teachers through this project and finding out about different schools and places through the notes teachers send with their letter of the alphabet. If any of you have photos of your alphabet from last year and it would be okay with you if I published it in a blog post, please email it to firstgradefoundme@gmail.com. Every year teachers ask for ideas and want to know what the letter might look like.

A template like the letter below will be provided. You'll print it on cardstock and have your class decorate it.

The project will run from September 1st-30th to give everyone time to get back to school, decorate, and mail their letters. If possible, try to send your letter as early in September as possible.

I'd love to have you participate! Just a little favor, though, please sign up only if you really intend to follow through with the project. It is heartbreaking to kids and teachers alike to end up with an incomplete alphabet

Just a couple more little things:
I'm planning to stop sign-ups about August 1st so I can get the lists out. Also, I'll be in touch via email to give you any updates and send out the templates.

If you want to participate in the project this year, please click {here} and fill out the google form.

I've also made this button if you want to share about this exchange on your blog. I'm so happy to have you along on the wonderful bloggy adventure!

The Alphabet Letter Exchange is Ready to Go!

I sure hope you are having a wonderful summer and had a fantastic 4th of July too (if you're in the US). We spent the holiday at my brother-in-law's enjoying the company, BBQ, and fireworks.
Now that I'm back home I wanted to get the Alphabet Letter Exchange up and running. It was so much fun last year! This project started as the Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom Alphabet Letter Exchange (I just shortened the name this year.). As a first grade teacher I just love this book as a way to review letters at the start of the year and this project fits wonderfully with it.
This year things will run almost the same way. One change I did make was to the way you sign up. Instead of signing up in the comments below, I'm trying out Google forms. My husband tested it out and it worked so I hope it does when you try it too. I've never used it before so hang in there with me...

Here's how it works:

1. Your class will be assigned a letter of the alphabet and put into a group with 25 other teachers. Each teacher would have their class decorate 26 of that letter. A template like the letter below will be provided. You'll print it on cardstock and have your class decorate it. Decorate it however you like, just have fun and get creative!
2. You'll need to mail 25 of the letters to the members of your group and you'll keep one. Each teacher is responsible for their own postage charges. At the end of the project you should have a complete, unique, student-made alphabet!

3. You could also include a short letter about your class, school, and where you live. This is optional.

The project will run from about September 1st-30th to give everyone time to get back to school, decorate, and mail their letters.

I'd love to have you participate! Just a little favor, though, please sign up only if you really intend to follow through with the project. It is heartbreaking to kids and teachers alike to end up with an incomplete alphabet. If you do want to participate, just click on the button below and fill out the form!

Just a couple more little things:
I'm planning to stop sign-ups about August 1st so I can get the lists out. Also, I'll be in touch via email to give you any updates and send out the templates.

As of late on July 26, the exchange is full. If you'd like to be on a waiting list, please go ahead and send me an email. Thanks!

I've also made this button if you want to share about this exchange on your blog. The more, the merrier! I'm so happy to have you along on the wonderful bloggy adventure!

Alphabet Letter Exchange News

I got good news and bad news yesterday. I'd been hoping to change schools which would have meant changing grade levels. But it didn't work out for next year. I'm kinda bummed but it means that I don't have to think of a new name for my blog. And that's good because I like the name of my little blog.

Another good thing is that the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Alphabet Letter Exchange I hosted last year is a GO for this year!! I'm so excited!

For now I just wanted to spread the good news. I'll post about signing up for it sometime around mid-July. For now, just something to think about. If you'd like more information you can check out the project {here}. There are pictures of the bulletin board I created to display the letters and pictures of what a few other teachers did with their letters {here}

Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Alphabet Exchange and WBT Video

My students are so excited about the Alphabet Letter Exchange! These are the letters we have so far (we're in Group 1):

The kids especially enjoy seeing the photos of other classes. Today I passed around the pictures that came with the M & Z. One of the boys noticed that a boy in the photo was wearing an Angry Birds shirt "just like me!", he said. My students are largely very low-income with not much experience outside their neighborhood. I loved that he made a connection with another boy on the opposite side of the country. Hopefully this helps my kiddos begin to realize that there's a great big world waiting out there for them to discover.
I thought I'd also share a video I found yesterday. If you haven't seen it yet, it's AMAZING. The kids are just so engaged! It's a first grade teacher's math lesson. I really want to incorporate WBT. I've watched some videos and this one's got me excited about it again. You'll have to click on the link to get to the video, though. I need to go back to Blogging 101 and learn how to put a video into my blog. In the meantime, here's the link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CP-P9Lq68Ac

I'm off to the Southern California Blogger Meet-Up. I'm so excited!!!  We're staying down there to spend Sunday with some good friends. A fun weekend awaits! I'll try to post pictures later today.
Have a wonderful Saturday!
